Historic North Philadelphia Boxing Gym to be Converted into a Marriott Hotel

Mariott Hotels have recently announced plans to purchase the famous Blue Horizon boxing venue on Broad Street between Master and West Thompson.

According to Mariott, the venue will be used as a housing space for one of Mariott’s new Moxy brand “Pod” hotels.

The hotels are designed to provide a smaller, more affordable space for visitors and guests, providing an alternative for visitors who plan to spend their stays on the go.

According to the Philadelphia Historical Commission, the building will still be considered a historic site and the commission has stated that the front facing facade, which extends four stories high, will not be altered.

The Blue Horizon will be Mariott’s second pod hotel being constructed in the city, with another Pod hotel being constructed in Center City.

Built in 1865 and opened as a boxing venue in 1961, the Blue Horizon was once voted by The Ring magazine as the greatest boxing venue in the world.

Though closed in 2010, the venue held fights up until 2009 and hosted some of the biggest names in Philadelphia boxing.

The renovations to the hotel are estimated to cost around $22 million, but no opening date for the hotel has been announced as of yet.
