Seven men and five women will determine the fate of a man who is accused of murdering a Temple University student in August of 2017.
Joshua Hupperterz, 30, is charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime, abuse of corpse, and tampering with evidence in the August 2017 murder of 22-year-old Jenna Burleigh.
Hupperterz is accused of murdering Burleigh after meeting her at the Pub Webb bar located just west of Temple’s Main Campus on Cecil B.Moore Avenue.
After leaving the bar together, Hupperterz allegedly took Burleigh back to his off-campus apartment and murdered her. Investigators say he later placed her body into a storage container, and had his cousin drive him to Hupperterz’s Jenkintown home for the evening. According to investigators, the following day, September 1st, a Lyft driver was called to take the container to his grandmother’s house in Wayne County. Burleigh’s body was discovered the next day by the grandmother’s estranged husband.
Hupperterz has pled not guilty to the charges, and has claimed that his roommate is the one that killed Burleigh according to Philly.com.
Police contested his claims, as Hupperterz, shortly after his arrest, was observed with scratches on his neck, and lacerations to his right hand according to NBC Philadelphia. Hupperterz claimed that the lacerations were from breaking a bowl while drunk, and the scratches were from rough sex earlier in the week.
Opening statements begin Tuesday.
