PA Auditor General Announces Audit of Temple University

Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale announced Thursday he is beginning an audit of Temple University.

DePasquale said in a press conference at the Liacouras Center that the audit will focus on tuition rates, capital improvement, accuracy of academic status, background clearances of employees, and effectiveness of sexual harassment prevention policy.

“We need to make sure Temple is doing the best they can to provide an accurate picture for the parents and the students who are committing to go to this great institution.”

DePasquale also pointed out that Pennsylvania students have the highest amount of college debt in the United States. Pittsburg University tuition is the most expensive for a public institution in the country; Penn State ranks third.

“I firmly believe we cannot allow a single student to skip college, simply because they cannot afford it,” said DePasquale.

Temple Update asked the Auditor General if he would be looking into the recent falsification of data of the Fox School of Business’ rankings.

“We will certainly be looking at everything when it comes to those statistics.”

DePasquale also addressed Temple’s proposed on campus stadium, stating that he would make sure no tax payer dollars would be used to build a stadium. Kaiser agreed that the university would not be using any commonwealth funding for a sports complex, which is currently stalled.

Ken Kaiser, Chief Financial Officer of Temple University, took to the podium after the Auditor General’s announcement, to make a statement.

“At the conclusion of the audit, I am sure the Auditor General and the citizens of Pennsylvania will see that Temple University’s mission of providing access to an excellent and affordable education is alive and well,” said Kaiser.

The audit, which will begin today (August 30), has no defined timeline, but will run from July 2016 until the end of the audit.  DePasquale said that he wants his team to work “as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
