SportsDesk Practice Report: UConn Week

Temple looks to add their sixth win in seven tries this Saturday at UConn.

Temple finished off their stint with the South Florida Bulls the only way they knew how. A defensive touchdown to ice the game. The Owls win puts their record at 8-4 and 6-1 in the conference, winners of five of their last six contests. Their chance at a conference championship was put to rest following a Saturday night UCF win over Cincinnati. So, the Owls will play just one more regular season game before bowl season is upon us. This week Temple will travel up to Connecticut to take on the struggling Huskies who sit at 1-10 and 0-7 in the conference. Their only win coming from a 56-49 win over Rhode Island in week three.

In the Owls matchup with the Bulls last Saturday, Isaiah Wright had 117 all-purpose yards, 114 of those coming from special teams. 73 of those yards came from a punt return that gave the Owls the lead that they wouldn’t give up. His performance on special teams landed him Special Teams Player of the Week in the AAC.

Quincy Roche had a big day on the defensive side of the football. He totaled nine tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and a fumble recovery. The Owls scored all their points in the second half but only had one offensive TD thanks to Ryquell Armstead. Wright’s punt return TD and a scoop-and-score by Chapelle Russell in the end zone, plus two field goals were all major contributions to the teams win. Being able to score in every aspect of the game was a major point Coach Collins makes to his team.

This will be the seventh season in a row Temple has faced UConn. The Owls lead 4-2 since 2012. Since 2014, the Owls have outscored the Huskies 108-41. Coach Collins declined to comment on the status of C Matt Hennessy whether or not he’ll be available this week or for the bowl game.

The energy was that for one last regular season game, the team wants to go 1-0. The team wants to finish the season 9-4 and have no more losses. The first part of that process is getting a win in Connecticut this Saturday.

The game is set to kickoff form Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT on Saturday at 3:30 PM. The game will be broadcasted on ESPNU AND you can listen in on WTEL 610 ESPN radio. You can also listen in to student radio WHIP which you can access through the iHeart Radio app to listen to the SportsDesk’s very own Vince Coll analyze the game.
