Temple University’s Panhellenic sororities are facing a major change to their traditional recruitment process this year as Temple has changed recruitment from the fall semester to the spring semester.
This change comes, in part, as a result of the university requiring students to have a college GPA before participating in Panhellenic sororities, as many of the organizations have GPA requirements that sisters must meet as a part of membership.
In the deferred recruitment model, interested women will come back to campus a week early after the winter break and participate in recruitment from January 5th to the 9th. During recruitment the potential new members will meet with each of the five Panhellenic sororities and ultimately try to find where they fit the best through a mutual selection process between them and each of the organizations.
As a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Kaitlin Manion encourages women who are on the fence about coming out for recruitment to take a chance and sign up.
“You never know what it [recruitment] is going to be like unless you push yourself and put yourself out there,” said Manion, “Everyone is nervous about recruitment, from rho gammas to seniors, and that’s why it makes it easier to meet all of the different sisters and see what each chapter is about. The worst thing that can happen is that you realize it’s not for you and drop out of recruitment, which is something that no one will judge you for.”
Despite the recruitment process being changed to the spring, Phi Sigma Sigma sister Juli Johnson encourages girls to come our for recruitment because she believes Greek life at Temple gives students a wide variety of opportunities.
“I really want girls to come out [for recruitment] because I regret not coming out when I first had the opportunity,” said Johnson, “I put it off for a year and a half and it’s my biggest regret in college. It’s the bonds made within your own chapter, on campus, and across the nation. I never would’ve met my best friends, made my fondest memories, or have the level of confidence and sense of self that I do without Greek life.”
Thus far, over 300 women have signed up to participate in spring recruitment at Temple. The recruitment link is open until December 1st and provides interested women with information about the recruitment process.
