The UNCF 7th Annual Mayor’s Masked Ball

A night of generosity emerged through a sea of masked faces at The United Negro College Fund  as it celebrates it’s 7th Annual Mayor’s Masked Ball at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Mayor Jim Kenney and other community leaders participated in the black-tie affair this year to honor Historical Black Colleges.

Mayor Kenney, speaking to participants, described the impact of the special event

“…it’s an enjoyable evening, lots of nice people and we raise a lot of money for lots of worth young people who need the extra help to get to college and get through it. “

Temple University has contributed money to UNCF in support of the nation’s oldest HBCUs. Dr. Valerie Harrison, the senior advisor to President Englert, states the university has contributed over 30,000 dollars. This is act is very rare among other universities when it comes to sharing resources and connections with Pennsylvania’s HBCUs.

Along with fundraising, live/silent auctions took place with an award ceremony honoring sponsors and scholarship recipients. Rick Williams, an anchor 6 ABC, spoke about how he strives to be a mentor to students who have been through the same hardships as himself when he attended Howard University.

The event’s theme is “the mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a beautiful thing to invest in.”
