President Trump announced Friday at the White House that he and his fellow conservatives in Congress had finally reached an agreement with Congressional Democrats.
Speaking to the press, Trump praised the efforts of himself and other prominent GOP members in working out a deal to re-open the government and alleviate the pains of a nearly 35-day shutdown.
Though many may be relieved at the re-opening, Trump stated that the deal will not last, Tweeting later that “This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!”
Trump’s temporary re-opening of the government comes after previous statements of staunch opposition to conceding on the issue of the federal shutdown, specifically over funding for his
supposed “border wall”. The current agreement provides no funding for any such wall.
In a previous message to the US public, delivered from the White House, Trump called for an end to the “crisis” at the US border and had previously instructed Senate Republicans not to vote on any proposal that lacked border funding.
Though many on the Right praised the president’s decision, many of his staunch supporters took to social media to decry the president.
Ann Coulter, a prominent GOP reactionary and Trump supporter, Tweeted that the deal was “Good news for George Herbert Walker Bush: As of today, he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States.”
Since the deal, Trump has stated that if an arrangement is not reached by February 15th that the government will either shut down once again or that he will issue a state of emergency.
