Activists Propose Changes to Make Safer Bike Lanes in Center City

Citizens of Center City neighborhoods like Society Hill are proposing changes along with City Council that would change bike lanes to make them much safer for bicyclists.

It’s not just about wearing helmets. It’s about creating streets that make it safer for everybody. Philly is a great city to bike in but its not as safe as it could be.

Som bike lanes have been causing major safety concerns for pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists alike.

Some Temple students believe that the bike lanes could use some improvements that would make them safer and more convenient for those traveling by bike, scooter, or skateboard. As well as this, some students want improvements to the quality of Philadelphia streets such as filling potholes and cracks to make the streets smoother and safer.

Activists are fighting for changes to bike lanes like one behind the closing Macy’s in Center City that requires bicyclists to ride close to 13th St traffic. The proposed changes would include concrete barriers to protect bicyclists instead of plastic pylons.

City Council is aiming to pass these bike lane changes by the summertime. They say they are aiming to make the streets safer for all who share Philadelphia’s roads, including bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers.
