At Temple University Television, a single show has proven that passion can create a masterpiece. “Artists Among Us” has not only captured the hearts of its audience but has also earned two nominations from the prestigious NATAS College Student Production Awards. This is a story of discovery, not just for the viewers, but for the students behind the show.
“For me, I think that art is powerful because it connects people,” says Delia Joyce, one of the show’s producers. She believes the true magic of the show lies in the human connections it forges. “I think that it’s so special because the people that we interview, I wouldn’t have met otherwise. I would have never heard their stories, I would have never heard about their art.”
For Delia and the team, the most important part of their creative process was simply taking that first step. As Delia puts it, “I think that if you’re passionate about something, you should just do it.” This sentiment is echoed by host Rachel Williams, who adds, “You kind of just have to throw yourself into it. Once you kind of start putting yourself out there, going after your dreams and ideas, the path starts to create itself.”
For Rachel, “Artists Among Us” has offered a new way of seeing the world around her. “I’ve become really appreciative of the world, I feel a lot more grounded,” she says. “It really shows you how there are stories everywhere. I think “Artists Among Us” has shown me that really anything can be art.”
The show has become a canvas for creativity, where the work is more than just a project; it’s a purpose. A purpose they hope will inspire other artists to share their own stories.
“I like to consider myself an artist, and I think that a lot of the time, artists go unseen, their story goes untold,” Delia explains. “So it’s very important to me that they get their story out there and their art is appreciated.”
With shows like “Artists Among Us,” Temple University students are doing more than just making TV; they’re discovering the profound power of art. Their two nominations prove that you don’t need permission to create something meaningful. All you need is passion and the courage to take the first step.
“Artists Among Us” was recognized at the NATAS College Student Production Awards on Saturday, September 20th, in Philadelphia. For the students of TUTV, it’s a testament to what’s possible when you believe in your work and the stories you want to tell.
