Ambler, PA. (4/11/13) – Fresh off a non-conference loss at home to Lehigh, the Owls fell once again to the USF Bulls 13-6.
With senior ace Matt Hockenberry on the hill for the Owls, Temple had a fighting chance to start the series off with a win. With two outs in the first, DH Daniel Portales drove home the game’s opening run with an RBI single. The Bulls would put the hurt on Hockenberry some more in the second with two more runs. 2B Reyn Sugai was the only Owl to get a hit in the first two innings and the rout was only getting started.
CF Luke Maglich and Portales led off the third with back to back singles and twins Levi and Luke Borders would follow with their own. Luke drove home two in the inning and pushed the USF lead to five. Temple would score in the bottom of the frame however with 3B Derek Peterson smacking a double to left field.
The Bulls put the game out of reach in the fourth as two errors and a two RBI single by SS Zac Gilcrease highlighted a five run inning. Up 10, the Owls’ comeback hopes fell on the shoulder’s of their inconsistent offense.
Hockenberry was relieved for Phil Gianakos who fared well in mop-up duty but encountered trouble in the seventh. Maglich and PH Hayden Kelley both had RBI singles and the Bulls added another via sac fly.
Bulls’ starter Jimmy Herget had his best outing of the season going 6.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Temple would get on the board with the game well in hand. PH Texas Williams hit a sac fly in the seventh, CF Jimmy Kerrigan hit a three run bomb in the eighth and 1B Robert Amaro drove in a run with a single in the ninth. The Bulls took the 13-6 win hitting a robust .361 for the game.
