After the first round of the Cornell Spring South Florida Invitational at the 7,050-yard par 72 Fazio Couse at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Temple men’s golf placed 2nd out of 3 teams.
The three teams competing in the tournament are Temple, Dartmouth and Cornell. A total of 22 players are playing in the tournament.
As a team, the Owls carded an opening round total of 298, which resulted in a 10-over-par score for the day. The top four scores on the team were counted for the first round of the tournament.
Senior Brandon Matthews posted the lowest score of the day after an opening round of 4-under-par 68. Matthews is looking for his ninth career win at Temple, which would break the current Temple record of eight.
Sophomore Mark Farley shot an opening round of 75. After the round, Farley was in 11th.
Freshman Trey Wren and redshirt freshman John Barone shot opening rounds of 79 and 76, respectively. Barone finished the day in a tie for 12th and Wren was in 19th.
Freshman Sam Soeth posted a round of 82, which put him in 22nd.
Freshman Gary McCabe fired an opening round of 70, which put him in a tie for 3rd. Senior Liam Fahey carded a round of 81, which put him in a tie for 20th.
McCabe and Fahey are competing as individuals in the tournament, which means their scores are not counted towards the team total.
Cornell leads the team tournament after carding an opening round team total of 1-under-par 287. Matthews leads the individual tournament after an opening round of 68.
The Owls will look to move up the leaderboard in the final round on Sunday.
