Mayor Parkers Budget Plan: How Does It Effect Temple?

“This year, I am calling it the One Philly 2.0 Budget – the new and improved version! It’s a $6.7 Billion Budget – brimming with vital investments for Philadelphians.” – Cherelle Parker

Over the past year, Mayor Cherele Parker has made many investments in key issues like housing and public safety. This year, in her budget address she announced new enhancements coming to Broad Street which will directly impact north Philly residents, especially temple students.

Broad Street Speed Detection Cameras

The mayor announced the installation of speed cameras on PA-13 and North Broad Street right through campus. All in an effort to reach zero traffic deaths.

Mayor Parker says, “My Administration has moved to advance safety projects across the city – with a focus on every mile of the High Injury Network where the majority of fatal and serious injury crashes occur.”

Councilmember Isaiah Thomas has been working on this project for over a year, piloting speed cameras across the city. His goal is to keep Philadelphians safe, with an emphasis on students.

He says, “The primary means for traveling for most college students is walking. you might have some who bike some take the car.” And “We want folks to be cautious, but we also want folks to see an improvement on how cars travel on broad street.”

Twice A Week Trash Collection

The cameras arent the only change coming to the north side, the mayor also announced the expansion of the twice-weekly trash collection program. Residents are excited about the change.

Temple junior, Sadie Roser says, “I think that trash is definitely something that could be an issue at times on this street, especially if something gets missed or we forget to take it out”

For Philly residents like Sadie, trash twice a week could help with trash piling up on busy college streets.
