Owls Soar at Liberty Bell Judo Classic

The 36th Annual Liberty Bell Judo Classic filled Holy Family University’s gym with the sounds of mat slaps, cheers, and referee calls as athletes of every age competed for medals.

Temple Owls were among that crowd, not just as competitors, but behind the scenes.

The tournament was started in 1988 by Temple University alumnus Lou Moyerman while his children, Adam and Kristin Moyerman, continue the tradition to this day.

Temple’s connection remains strong even through today, with adjunct professor Ray Huxen, who teaches judo on campus and runs the Philadelphia Judo Club.

“Facing somebody across a mat who you’ve never seen before and who’s literally coming here and paying for the chance to smash you into the ground kind of makes you not scared of a lot of other things.,” Huxen said.

Former Temple student Collin Shannon credits Huxen’s class for fueling his passion for the sport.

“I got a full-time job and I’m still trying to make time to drive here to Philly from Downingtown which is by West Chester to make it to these classes because it’s just, they’re so fun,” Shannon said.

Adam Moyerman shared what inspires him to keep the event going yearly, and what judo teaches beyond competition.

“I tell all the kids at my judo club, ‘Yes, I want you to win everything. You’re not going to win everything in life,’ and I think it helps with that lesson.”
