Current Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner is facing a familiar challenger this election season — Pat Dugan, who’s making accountability and public safety central to his campaign.
Dugan says his focus is on ensuring that criminals are held responsible for their actions.
“It’s all about accountability and prosecuting the bad guys,” Dugan said. “I think that would help Temple as well as every other area in the city of Philadelphia.”
He believes Philadelphia has too many high-impact crime cases and that more must be done to make neighborhoods safer.
“I’m a hardcore, gritty Philadelphian,” Dugan said. “But frankly, there are some places I don’t want my grandkids going to. There are just too many places like that in the city, and I want to turn that around.”
So what exactly does a district attorney do? The DA is the city’s top prosecutor — a lawyer responsible for proving that someone committed a crime and ensuring justice is served.
Krasner has served as Philadelphia’s district attorney for over six years and previously defeated Dugan in the Democratic primary. His campaign website lists “justice for all” as one of his top priorities.
“My plan is to enforce the law equally,” Krasner said. “Against people who have money and people who don’t, people who are famous and people who are not, and people who wear uniforms and people who don’t. That’s my job — that’s what I intend to do.”
With recent discussions about the potential for the National Guard to be deployed in Philadelphia, Krasner emphasized that, if re-elected, he will uphold the law while protecting residents’ rights.
“I can tell you that my oath is to uphold the Constitution — federal and state laws are clear that you cannot do this,” he said. “I will do everything consistent with the law, the Constitution, and my oath to seek justice and protect those communities.”
