Operations at Philadelphia International Airport are running smoothly now, but just hours earlier, the scene looked very different.
TSA agents say security lines stretched out the door earlier in the day, leaving travelers frustrated, stressed, and in some cases, stranded.
“It was a lot… it’s so overwhelming,” one traveler said.
Across Philadelphia and the country, many passengers are dealing with similar challenges as the government shutdown impacts airport staffing.
“Stressed… stressed, tired…” another traveler shared.
Camille Andrade experienced that disruption firsthand. After returning from a trip to Puerto Rico with her family, she encountered massive TSA lines that caused her to miss her flight.
“The TSA line was out the door around the building outside,” Andrade said.
Left hours away from home, Andrade and her family were forced to spend the night inside the airport.
“We have to find a way to get to the train station and a way to get home,” she said.
The delays come as TSA agents continue working without pay during the shutdown, with some employees calling out. As a result, wait times have become unpredictable—some travelers report waiting hours, while others get through in minutes.
“It was so easy… within ten minutes, I got through TSA,” one passenger said.
To manage staffing shortages, Philadelphia International Airport has consolidated operations, closing several terminals. Terminals A-West and F are currently shut down, joining Terminal C, which closed last week.
Despite the challenges, many travelers expressed sympathy for TSA agents working under difficult conditions.
“I just couldn’t even imagine,” one traveler said.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be working right now,” another added. “But if you love your job, you keep doing it.”
As of now, wait times appear manageable. But travelers say they’re not taking any chances.
“We got to Dallas three hours early, and I’m like—we need to get here even earlier,” one person said.
For some, the delays have even led to unexpected expenses.
“Our clothes got wet… so we had to buy things,” a traveler explained.
While the airport appears calm for now, uncertainty remains. If the shutdown continues, travelers should plan ahead and arrive early because conditions can change quickly.
