Rittenhouse Square came alive for the holidays this past Monday when Santa came to town to light the Christmas tree. The event was organized by the Friends of Rittenhouse Square and Rittenhouse Row, and sponsored by The Radisson Blu Warwick Hotel, IBEW Local 98, TD Bank, Senator Larry Farnese and Penn Medicine.
CBS3’s Kate Bilo was the emcee for the night and introduced guests and performances by the Walnut Street Theatre, who performed Mary Poppins, and saxophonist Larry McKenna. Other performers like Jen Creed and the Merion-Mercy Academy Choir set the holiday mood leading up to Santas’ arrival.
The rain couldn’t stop the crowd from growing in size awaiting Santa who came just in the ‘nick’ of time to count down the tree, and the rest of the square, being lit.
Philadelphia Council president Darrell Clarke made an appearance to wish the crowd a happy holidays and to inform them that Rittenhouse’s Christmas tree was ranked number two in the International Christmas Tree Magazine, just behind the tree at the White House.
The tree will be up for the rest of December for all to enjoy during the holidays.
