Temple women’s tennis played their last home match of the season on Wednesday, April 9th, at TU Pavilion. The match was Senior Day for Temple and it marked the last home match for Owls Jordan Batey, Carly Bohman, Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina.
The four departing seniors were able enjoy a victory at their final career home match as the Owls defeated the visiting Fordham Rams 5-2. Temple’s win is their third straight, as they will enter the American Athletic Conference Championship next week at 8-10 overall.
The Owls started off with a quick win at the first and second doubles flights to go up 1-0 early. Both teams defeated Fordham with a score of 8-4.
Freshman Anais Nussaume increased the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Fordham’s Hanna Fritzinger at No. 6. The Rams got on the board with a win at No. 2, before sophomore Minami Okajima gave the home team a 3-1 lead after a 6-1, 7-6(2) victory at the fifth flight.
After Fordham pulled within one after a win at the third flight making it 3-2, Doms handled her No. 1 opponent with a 7-6, 6-4 decision to secure an Owls victory. Freshman Dina Karina added a 7-6(5), 6-3 decision at the fourth flight for the final of 5-2.
“This was a great way to finish the regular season,” said Head Coach Steve Mauro. “The girls really stepped up on Senior Day and gave us a great day for all of the seniors. We appreciate all of the people who came out to support us.”
The Owls will next play when they compete for the conference title at the first American Conference tournament at USF in Tampa, Fla., April 17-20.
