Teens Cause Chaos on Temple’s Campus

“I wasn’t really expecting to experience that, and I was just really disappointed to see it,” said a Temple student.

Over the weekend, crowds of teenagers flooded Temple’s campus, prompting seven assaults and one robbery. Four of the victims were Temple students.

The crowd started at Morgan Hall and made its way down Cecil B. Moore Avenue to Temple Towers and Vantage apartments.

The robbery occurred just outside of Temple Towers. Resident Lalaj Johnson witnessed the aftermath.

“I came downstairs, I saw him in the lobby—he was bleeding, he was surrounded by paramedics,” said Johnson.

Kailah Allmond was picking up food when she saw a confrontation between a police officer and a teen.

“We didn’t know if anybody had a weapon—besides a baton or their fists—so it was very nerve-racking,” said Allmond.

Students like Michaela Makhanda are now concerned about campus safety.

“Is it going to happen to me? Especially for women who are alone,” said Makhanda.

Vice President of Public Safety Jennifer Griffin said arrests were made and that “incidents like this are unacceptable.”

Police Captain James Hennigan said TUPD is working on increasing police presence on campus as many Philadelphia schools are on spring break.

“We are working on deploying extra officers throughout the week,” said Hennigan.

He added that if an event like this happens again, students should contact TUPD immediately.

“We have officers out on the street, 24/7, and we’ll respond as quickly as possible,” said Hennigan.
