After coming off a 37-7 win vs. Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenessee, the Owls headed back to Philadelphia for their home opener versus Navy.
Just two minutes into the game, defensive lineman Sharif Finch forces a fumble and recovers the ball for the Owls. He goes on to score the first points of the game. Finch’s touchdown is the second defensive touchdown the have had this season, which is already one more than they had for the entire season last year.
At the end of the first half, PJ Walker hits wide receiver Romond Deloatch with a 6 yard pass and beautiful catch in the end zone. The refs review the play, and it’s good. Temple chalks up another 7 points, but Navy leads 17-14 at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Navy scored 2 touchdowns and although Temple couldn’t find the endzone, Austin Jones hit a 28-yard field goal to bring the score to 31-17.
Coach Rhule used all 3 of his 2nd half time outs in the 3rd quarter, which would later come back to haunt the Owls.
A 13-yard reception by Jalen Fitzpatrick in the 4th led to a touchdown for Temple, bringing the Owls only one touchdown away from tying it up.
But with only 2 minutes left to play and no timeouts left, PJ Walker scrambled to get the Owls the points they needed.
Navy defeats Temple 31-24.
When asked about game time management in the post game press conference, Coach Rhule responded: “To have no timeouts at the end of the game, that’s just not good football. That was a crucial mistake on us. I’m not going to blame anyone but myself.”
Owls have a BYE week next week and come back on September 20th at home versus Delaware State.
