How Temple Students View the Vote

Voting has become a hot topic across Philadelphia. Many residents are reflecting on the importance of their voices in shaping the future. Temple Update’s Amea Green hit the streets to gather insights from local voters and temple students about their thoughts on this election. In the 2020 Presidential Election, Philadelphia had 1,129,308 registered voters, but only 749,317 ballots were cast. This highlights the need for increased voter participation.

One Temple student shared, “I think as someone who is in Philly, it is more crucial than in other states.” Another emphasized, “Every vote really matters,” while another added, “I think everybody’s vote is really crucial. Everybody needs to get out and vote.”

For the upcoming election, Philadelphia has 1,037,671 registered voters. Historically, Pennsylvania has voted in favor of the winning candidate in the last two presidential elections—red in 2016 and blue in 2020. A student noted, “I think our generation is a majority of the votes, so I think everyone should go vote.” Another stated, “I think the young vote is the most important vote in this election. We have the most power out of anybody voting today.”

While most of the students we spoke to were supporters of Harris, there are also supporters of Trump in the Philadelphia community. One student mentioned, “People are pretty 50/50. I haven’t met someone who is exactly one way or another, so I think it’s pretty important.” Another shared, “I’m doing a mail-in ballot from home. I did not register in Philly, only in my hometown.” After talking to Temple students, it’s clear they are eager to vote and let their voices be heard. As Election Day approaches, Temple students are ready to make a difference. Philadelphia is ready to vote!
