Starting at the beginning of October, the men’s tennis team partnered with the Temple University Department of Public Safety for a weekly clinic for students at Dunbar Elementary School. Now, a few weeks into the clinic, athletes are already seeing major improvements.
Maj Najvirt Kolaric, a junior tennis player, is one of the athletes behind teaching the students. He says:
“I think they are doing great job, they are very excited you know, Energetic, they listen and there just Genuinely playing very well.”
TUPD Officer Leroy Wimberly, the man behind connecting Temple University with the community and who also helped jumpstart the clinic, said it’s not about the university but the community:
“I use our Temple community because it’s not just about Temple, it’s about the community as a whole.”
Students at Dunbar Elementary are eager every Tuesday to learn the fundamental skills of tennis and about Temple: One student told us:
“I would like about like, how to shoot it, how to not miss it and how to not, like, do things wrong.”
“It is a fun experience.”
Providing a fun and memorable experience for both students and athletes is not just a goal, but the cornerstone of Officer Wimberly’s approach to organizing and leading the clinic. His focus on creating a positive, energetic environment helps foster meaningful connections.
“Temple University, one of the big things with Temple was a mission and the mission is integrating into the community and to give them something that can hopefully change their mindset.”
Officer Wimberly will also be holding a Christmas event this upcoming December at The Liacouras Center.
