Temple joins 56 other schools this coming year in collaborating on the international #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship.
The scholarship is being offered to international students considering studying in America in an attempt to alleviate the financial burden that studying overseas has on many students.
Started as a social media campaign in May 2018, Temple helped to lead the national campaign that has since spread to colleges across the United States, including universities in Hawaii.
Joining Temple in support of the scholarship are local schools Widener university in Delaware county and Cedar Crest college in Allentown.
President Englert stated in a public announcement that “We are proud to lead the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship program, and pledge our continued support to international students.”
The scholarships, beginning in Fall 2019, will offer students who qualify two renewable annual scholarships to aid in up to 50 percent of the student’s tuition costs. Temple officials hope that, by allowing international students easier access to Temple and other universities, that they will be able to better engage in cultural exchange and study between students and staff.
Several organizations across the country, such as the Institute of International Education, have also spoken out in praise of the efforts by universities to include international students on their campuses.
Allen E. Goldman, the IIE president stated that the scholarship “meets an essential challenge in the effort to support international and refugee students.”
Qualifications for the scholarship require applicants to not posses official U.S. citizenship, and must fill out an official application via the scholarships site.
