The Temple Owls defeated the East Carolina Pirates Sunday at McGonigle Hall to earn their tenth sweep of the season.
It was absolute dominance for Temple as the Owls produced a .415 attack, had every hitter hit over .286, held the best blocking team in the conference to just one block. Temple out dug the Pirates 39-31, and produced their 2nd best hitting performance of the season.
In the first set, the start was back and forth as both teams traded kills. eventually Temple managing to earn a 6-5 lead early. Temple would then go on an 8-2 run eventually giving the Owls a 14-7 advantage. ECU would eventually cut the lead to 15-10, but Temple would go on another run which would see Temple outscore the Pirates 8-3 to put Temple up 23-13. ECU would then score three straight points before Temple would end the set with two kills from juniors Irem Asci and Izzy Rapacz.
In the second set, the Owls would jump off to a four point lead before the Pirates would score three straight to even the match at 15. From there, Temple would outscore ECU 7-3 to take a 22-18 advantage. After a timeout called by ECU, Temple would end the set off of kills from Asci and senior Caroline Grattan, and a service error from the Pirates.
The third and final set started off even at six before Temple would another 8-3 run. The run would push Temple’s advantage to 14-9 before ECU would battle back to put the score at 15-11. Temple would hit one more eight point run; this time the Owls would go on an 8-4 run to take a 23-15 lead. The Pirates would respond with by scoring the next 4 out of 6 points but the Owls would end the match on a kill from Grattan.
The Owls would get solid production from Asci who had 19 kills and 9 digs. Asci would also hit .522 in the match. Rapacz would also have a solid day notching 11 kills and 8 digs.
The Owls will be in Florida all next weekend to take on UCF Friday, and USF on Sunday.
