Temple Women’s Basketball Shows Rust, Lack of Chemistry in Loss to 3-0 Villanova

It was easy to see Friday at McGonigle Hall that this was the season opener for the Temple Women’s Basketball team. By that I mean sloppy play and inexperience plagued the Owls as Villanova, who has already played two games, made this win look easy.

After the first quarter came to a close Temple trailed by only 6, then found themselves outscored in the 2nd and 3rd quarter 52 to 28. The Owls helped their case with a strong 4th quarter outscoring Villanova by 12 points (17-2 run to close) but the hole they dug themselves into was too deep.

Villanova shot 51% from the field compared to Temple’s 41%. Temple struggled behind the arc only hitting 3 3pt shots. Now Senior and notable AAC stud Mia Davis did not waste a minute picking up where she left off in her Junior campaign. Davis scored a team high 22 points and fought for 7 rebounds. Senior Emani Mayo produced 7 points along with 7 rebounds, she was followed by Asonah Alexander who was passing well, applying a team high 6 assists along with 6 points.

A bright spot for the Owls came when Freshman G Jasha Clinton and Grad Transfer Jada Graves both shined in their debuts. Clinton scored 16 points while Graves (17-18 CAA DPOY) secured 5 rebounds and added 11 points herself.

Maddy Siegrist and Sarah Mortenson carried the load for the Wildcats.

Villanova (3-0)

Temple (0-1)

Temple will resume play against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. Tip-off is at 2PM and the game will air on ESPN+.
