Olivia-Anne Eisner, graduate student at Temple University says, “Us as college students, we have a very large say in the Philadelphia outcome for just even local elections, not just like the presidential.”
The country’s eyes are turning to students hoping they will let their voices be heard this election season.
City commissioner Lisa Deeley comments, “Your vote is your voice. If you don’t speak up, someone is just going to take your voice away.”
Pennsylvania will play a critical role in determining this year’s race as a major swing state, and while Philadelphia is making efforts to register students, Temple’s very own owls want to make a difference.
Hannah Palmer spends time on campus canvassing.
The student says, “Just getting people to vote and getting them the information on this election is just making a huge difference in this election.”
Temple Votes, a non-partisan student and faculty led initiative feels the same way.
“We really see our role as helping educate students around the importance of civic engagement and democracy,” Deanne DeCrescenzo, associate dean of students, describes.
The All-in Campus Democracy Challenge recognized Temple Votes for their work to mobilize students.
DeCrescenzo adds, “We’re just trying to be a resource for students to help them find some non-partisan information about voter registration and why it’s important to actually get out and vote this year.”
Students can expect more election events on campus leading up to the big day.
“This and every election is very important for college students to be voting in…” Lisa Deeley says.
