Women’s Basketball falls 74-70 to Penn Quakers

The University of Pennsylvania Quakers faced the Temple Owls at McGonigle Hall on January 22, 2014. Tip-off was set for 7pm.

Despite the Owls’ 4 point loss (74-70), the women’s team was no breeze for Penn to win. After winning tip-off, the Owls’ player Taylor Robinson threw her game into full force scoring 6 points. The Quakers only scored 2 points in the first 4 minutes by player Alyssa Baron.

Temple and Penn continued to battle through the first half, with Penn catching up at the half-way point. The score was 14-14. Though Penn began to pass the Owls’ near 0, the Owls kept fighting to only keep Penn with a 4 point lead. The score was 30-26 at halftime.

As the second half began, both teams were unsuccessful to score. At about a minute through, Penn player Alyssa Baron upped the score by 2 points from her foul shot, but the Owls quickly closed the gap. Natasha Thames scored 9 consecutive points over the course of 4 minutes. The score was then 35-34, Temple.

Near mid-way through the second half, Temple players Fitzgerald and Williams contributed to their games’ scores by shortly tying it to 66-66. With under a minute left, Rateska Brown scored a huge three pointer for the Owls tying the score 70-70.

Unfortunately Penn’s Alyssa Baron was fouled by Owls’ Natasha Thames in the middle of a layup; her two points from the layup plus her one foul shot made a win for Temple seem improbable. After the Owls’ Rateska Brown fouled Penn, Penn’s last foul shot brought the final score to a well-played 74-70.
