The Temple women’s tennis 2013-14 season ended with a 4-0 loss to the 10th seed UCF Knights. The loss came in the first round of the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by USF, on April 17th. The match was, however, closer than the score indicates as the Owls forced two tiebreakers.
UCF started the match with a quick 1-0 lead after wins at the first and third doubles flights. A fifth flight singles win made it a 2-0 match for UCF.
With UCF already up by a score of 2-0 senior Alicia Doms took the Knights’ Josephine Haraldson to a tiebreak in the opening set of No. 1 singles. Doms ultimately dropped a 7-6(5), 6-0 giving the Knights a 3-0 edge.
Fellow senior, Yana Mavrina, lost her first set of the second flight, 6-0, but forced the second tiebreaker of the night against her opponent Caroline Eberhart. Eberhart came out on top, however, ending the match with her 7-6(5) second-set win.
The seventh-seeded Owls close the year at 8-11 overall with a 1-3 conference record. The first round loss marked the Owls’ earliest playoff elimination under head coach Steve Mauro.
