#14 Owls fall to #9 Penn State

The number nine nationally-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the number fourteen nationally ranked Temple Owls field hockey team on Sunday October 5, 2014 by a score of 2-0.

Penn State was able to possess the ball for the majority of the first period in Temple’s defensive end.  The only offense that came from the Owls were a few counters attacks led by Amber Youtz but the Penn State defense was able to put a quick stop to that.

Temple’s star goalie Lizzy Millen kept the Owls in the game by saving the first seven shots on goal but the Nittany Lions were able to get one past her on a penalty corner shot by Taylor Herold with 4:26 remaining in the first half.  The Owls went into halftime down by one and without a registered shot on goal.

In the second period Temple was able to offensively possess the ball more but was only able to get one shot on goal. Temple’s first and only penalty corner came with 7:17 remaining in the second period but they could not capitalize by firing the shot high. Penn State’s Laura Gebhart put one more on the scoreboard for the Nittany Lions with 4:22 remaining second period ending any hope of a comeback.

The Owls fall to a record of 8-4 while the Nittany Lions improve to 10-2.  Temple will play host to Big Five rival Villanova on Friday October 10, 2014 at 3:00 PM.
