A Temple Update Guide to Finals Stress

It’s no secret some students get a little stressed during these final days of the semester.

At Temple, there is less than a week of classes and two study days left before final exams begin on Thursday, December 12th.

With eyes glued to computers and noses nestled in notebooks during finals, it’s often easy for students to get distracted from their own well being.

“That self-care piece is kind of the first thing to go when we get busy,” said Janie Egan from the Wellness Resource Center.

Temple Update spoke to health professionals about how to stay healthy and focused during this sometimes overwhelming time. One of the most important factors of staying sharp minded is usually one of the first to be neglected.

“Sleep is active rest. So there are things happening while we’re sleeping that really help us recharge and learn better. So I would really recommend that students pay attention to how much they’re sleeping and that they’re getting enough,” Egan said.

If you’re feeling anxious while studying , try a few simple tricks to ease your mind, like listening to music, writing in a journal, or talking to a loved one.

Although many students turn to caffeine to get them through the long hours at the library, it usually just makes them more stressed.

“Avoid it! Absolutely. It’s gonna actually cause more stress. It’s gonna increase your heart rate, increase your anxiety, make it harder to sleep, and all of those are actually going to increase your stress,” Director of Temple Student Health Services Mark Deny says.

Stressed or not – a few Temple students that we talked with seem ready for exams.

“We’re all looking for ways to maximize our efficiency. Just gotta get through this week,” said Temple senior Razeen Mahmood.

If you’re on campus and looking for a way to destress, feel free to stop by some of the study day events at the Charles Library. They are free and open to all students.
