Ambler, PA. (4/1/14) – On a humid Tuesday afternoon at Temple’s Ambler campus, the Owls were trampled by the Delaware Blue Hens 12-4.
After a RBI sac fly in the first off Temple starter Simon Mathews, the Blue Hens went on a rout in the second. Five singles led to four runs in the top half of the inning and was highlighted by a two run single by leadoff man Joe Giacchino. Mathews was pulled after the inning to conclude another depressing outing giving up five runs on five hits and three walks.
In the third, DH Greg Olenski and 3B Ryan Hartley hit back to back RBI doubles off RP Phil Gianakos as Delaware took a commanding seven run lead. The runs didn’t stop there. Five more Blue Hen runs came home in the fourth highlighted by an Olenski two RBI double and Gianakos outperformed Mathews in runs given up with seven in two innings.
All joking aside, Deleware starter Kevin Milley held the Owls scoreless through five and had plenty of run support to work with. 1B Robert Amaro drove in three runs with a groundout and a single and Temple scored another on a passed ball in the ninth. With the game well in hand, Delaware held on to their nine run lead and won by the score of 12-4. Milley picked up the win while Mathews was charged with the loss. Giacchino, Olenski and Hartley all had three hits in the highly uncontested affair.
Temple looks to rebound in either another Liberty Bell Classic game or head to Campbell’s Field in Camden to face conference foe Cincinnati.
