Campus Political Organizations Hope to Inspire Students to Get Out and Vote

Following the first 2016 Presidential Debate, election season is in full swing nation-wide. Many Temple students are inspired to light a political fire on campus, including student fellows and volunteers working with the Democratic Party of Pennsylvania.

“I think that is one of the great gifts of Democracy, anyone can get involved at any point of their life,” freshman volunteer Collin Wardius says, “ And I think it is important from an early age just showing students especially and younger children that your voice does matter.”

Student volunteers work in the North Philadelphia Office at Cecil B. Moore and 15th Street, calling voters to remind them of upcoming political events and registering people to vote.

Freshman volunteer Varun Sivakumar has talked with people from all over the political spectrum in his time with the Pennsylvania Democrats.

“I spoke to people from the Republican Party to the Libertarian Party to the Democrats,” he says, “I like gathering different people’s perspectives and talking about why this party may be a good fit for them and why they should vote for Hillary and definitely register.”

The student volunteers work anywhere from three to thirty-two hours a week, but they say at the end of the day the impact they make is well worth the time.

“It’s absolutely worth it,” sophomore fellow Georgia Mae Lively says with a smile, “It’s one more person who can vote now, it’s great!”

To get involved with the Democratic Party of Pennsylvania go to their website at https://www.padems.com/work-with-us/. To register to vote before the October 11th deadline, go to www.iwillvote.com.

There are Republican organizations on campus including the Temple College of Republicans. They declined to speak with Temple Update. To learn more about the Temple Republicans, click here.
