Lu Ann Cahn can relate to being in a new place.
She is in a brand new position at the School of Media and Communication.
“As the Director of Career Services for this school, it was a leap of faith. I mean I didn’t really know for sure what would happen and what it would be like,” Cahn said.
The new position aims to help students and alumni find internships and jobs in the communications field. The 8-time Emmy-award-winning journalist for Philadelphia’s NBC10 now faces new challenges in helping aspiring communicators find their way.
“Every single day we are sending daily job postings and internship postings to all 3,000 students, here in the School of Media and Communication. And then there is another 4,000 alumni who are getting weekly posts from us as well,” Cahn said.
Each week, SMC students have the opportunity to attend networking events as well as clinics and workshops that will help prepare them before sending out their resumes and cover letters to potential employers.
Cahn hosts “Lunch with Lu Ann” every Friday where a different special guest comes in to speak with the students.
“I love that it’s a casual environment. It’s not a big panel or formal in a kind of stadium seating. You’re right there, eyeball to eyeball with somebody who you can network with and connect with and I think those connections are very important,” Cahn said.
Temple University’s television news program, Temple Update, was thrilled to have a connection with such a notable figure in the news industry. Just this past weekend, Lu Ann returned to a familiar position as she joined Temple Update to cover the Papal visit in Philadelphia.
SMC students can learn more about these networking events, workshops, as well as job and internship opportunities through smc.temple.edu/smcconnect, by visiting Lu Ann’s office in room 7 of Annenberg Hall, following @luanncahn on Twitter, or emailing Lu Ann at LuAnnCahn@temple.edu.
