Matthews Loses Ground after Second Round of AAC Championship

After the second round of The American Athletic Conference Championship at the 7,025-yard par 72 Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida, Temple men’s golf placed 8th out of 9 teams.

As a team, the Owls carded a second round total of 304, which resulted in a 16-over-par score for the day. The top four scores on the team were counted for the first round of the tournament.

Senior Brandon Matthews followed an opening round of 69 with a second round of 2-over-par 74. Matthews struggled on the par 3’s, playing them in 4-over par. Heading into the final round, Matthews is in a tie for 6th. Matthews will need a special final round to record his ninth win at Temple, which would break the all-time wins record.

Sophomore Mark Farley carded a round of 75. After the second round, Farley is in 23rd.

Freshmen Gary McCabe and Trey Wren shot second rounds of 78 and 77, respectively. McCabe finished the day in a tie for 38th and Wren finished in 41st.

Redshirt freshman John Barone rounded out the Owls with a round of 79. After the round, Barone is in a tie for 42nd.

South Florida leads the team tournament with a two-day total of 3-under-par 285. South Florida’s Chase Koepka and Houston’s Vincent Martino share the individual tournament lead with two-day totals of 5-under-par 139.

The Owls will finish the 2015-16 season on Tuesday in the final round of the American Athletic Conference Championship.
