Tonight, Temple Theater celebrates its opening night of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, which runs through February 28 at the Tomlinson Theater located at 13th and Norris Streets. The musical draws inspiration from French painter George Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
The plot revolves around two storylines, a fictionalized version of Seurat also named George and the life of his great-grandson. Both men struggle as artists with finding their voice and searching for authenticity in a world that doesn’t understand them. The musical debuted originally in 1984 and has since seen two Broadway revivals, the most recent in 2017.
Temple’s production of the musical includes a 7:30 showing each night, as well as a matinee show at 2:00 on Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24.
Tickets for the event run $10 for students, $20 for seniors, and Temple employees, and $25 for general admission; they can be purchased online or at the Tomlinson Theater lobby, open Monday through Friday noon to 6 pm.
