After the first round of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate at the 6,765-yard par 70 Kingsmill Resort River Course in Williamsburg, Virginia, Temple men’s golf placed 20th out of 24 teams.
As a team, the Owls carded an opening round total of 305, which resulted in a 25-over-par score for the day. The top four scores on the team were counted for the first round of the tournament.
Senior Brandon Matthews led the Owls with an opening round of 4-over-par 74. After his first round, Matthews was in a tie for 42nd.
Freshmen Trey Wren and Gary McCabe each started their spring campaigns with scores of 77. Redshirt freshman John Barone also carded an opening round of 77. Wren, McCabe and Barone were each in a tie for 82nd after the first round of the tournament.
Freshman Sam Soeth shot a first round of 84, which put him in 125th with two rounds remaining to improve his position on the leaderboard.
The University of Tennessee leads the three-day team tournament after carding a team total of 4-over-par 284 for the first round. Penn State freshman Charles Huntzinger took the individual lead with an opening round of 67.
After a disappointing opening round, the Owls will look to improve their spot on the leaderboard during the second and third rounds on Monday and Tuesday at the home of the LPGA’s Kingsmill Open.
