Owls in Seventh Place after Day One of the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge

After the first round of the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge at the Quechee Club’s 6,840-yard, par 72 Highlands Course in Quechee, Vermont, Temple men’s golf placed 7th out of 13 teams.

As a team, the Owls put together a total team score of 304, which resulted in a fourteen-over-par total out of the top four scores for the first round.

Leading the cause for the Owls was senior Brandon Matthews after he carded a one-over-par 73, putting him in a tie for 15th after round one.

Matthews had to withdraw from the remainder of the Hartford Hawk Invitational this past week due to a pulled muscle in his back. With a lot of youth on this team, including two freshmen in the starting five, it is important to have Matthews in the lineup.

Freshman Sam Soeth out of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania made his debut for the Owls, Saturday. Soeth is tied for 29th after his first round 76. Fellow freshman Trey Wren carded a 78 to put him in a tie for 48th.

Sophomore Evan Thornton and junior Evan Notaro made their team debuts for the Temple this season and shot 79 and 77 respectively. Notaro is in a tie for 37th and Thornton is in a tie for 50th.

Sophomore John Barone and senior Liam Fahey shot 77 and 82 placing in ties for 37th and 66th respectively. They are competing as individuals in this tournament.

Dartmouth leads the two-day tournament after recording a three-under total of 285. John Lazor of Dartmouth holds the individual lead after firing a 67.

Play concludes tomorrow with the Owls looking to move up the leaderboard.
