On December 4th Penn’s Landing’s WinterFest holiday celebration added another attraction to its list of events with the lighting of a Christmas tree presented by PECO.
Beginning at 6:00 p.m, the free evening of fun was hosted by NBC Philadelphia’s Rosemary Connors and featured guest appearances from the Philadelphia Eagles’ drum line, the Sixer’s mascot Franklin and Santa Claus and included ice skating, visits with Santa and many opportunities for food and drink.
At 8:00 p.m, after an enthusiastic audience countdown and the lighting of the tree, there was a surprise: a firework show with holiday music courtesy of SugarHouse Casino.
The 40-foot tree is wrapped in LED light bulbs which will use 75 percent less energy than traditional lightbulbs and decorated with large winter-themed ornaments.
Hundreds of people gathered to watch the tree lighting and participate in the holiday festivities. For many people like Tina Geist from Port Richmond, WinterFest is an eagerly anticipated annual holiday tradition.
“I’ve been coming to WinterFest for five or six years now and before that I used to work here so I got to experience that end of it too,” said Geist.
Although WinterFest attracts many families with young children, it offers an array of activities that attract many college students like Temple University freshman Nydia Roomer who was looking for ways to explore the city.
“I think that I saw something for it [the event] on TV, people were talking about it,” said Roomer, “I was so excited to go because it was so close to me.”
WinterFest will be open throughout the holiday season and tickets are available here.
