In the heart of University City, Philadelphia celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month last Saturday at the Sazón Latin Food Festival.
For some, it was about celebrating new cultures, but for others, it was about celebrating their home.
Like Chaska Dempsey, grade 4, who said: “I was born in a Hispanic country, which is Guatemala, my mom is Nicaraguan, so I’m half Nicaraguan.”
One vendor, Colin Dempsey, father to Chaska and representing Café Duskaia, was even a Temple alum!
All around, the attendees and vendors were enjoying the celebration.
Colin Dempsey remarked, “I think these events all over the city really represented the diverse part of all the cultures, all of our Hispanic cultures, there’s nothing more important or delicious than that.”
And delicious it was! From fried plantains to Nicaraguan coffee, to Puerto Rican-style hot dogs, you could taste the culture in every bite.
While the food may have brought the people, the celebration of culture kept them here all afternoon.
“Us having a voice, being able to share our culture with everyone in the United States, especially since we’re here, I feel like it’s very festive and very happy and very you know especially the culture, the music, the food and you know.” said Iris Hernandez, an attendee enjoying some of the food and music.
The celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month will continue throughout Philly through October 15.
