Students Protest Against Professor’s Termination

Students and other members of the University community protested against the termination of Professor Anthony Monteiro Monday afternoon. The protest and rally was held on Liacouras Walk. Students spoke on behalf of Monteiro, a full-time, non-tenured African American studies professor, believes his termination was in retaliation for his involvement in protests against department policies.

Monteiro issued a letter of grievance against the of the College of Liberal Arts, Teresa Soufas,  after hearing that his contract was not going to be renewed.

“He’s just given us so much,” said African American Studies major Kashara White. “For me personally, he’s a mentor, and a teacher and a friend.”

Monday’s protest is just the latest development in a turbulent year for the African American Studies department.

We’ll have more information on the protest Thursday on Temple Update.
