The suspect in an off-campus sexual assault last month has been arrested, Philadelphia Police announced Thursday morning.
Police said they found 23-year-old Shakree Bennett in Essex County, New Jersey Wednesday and brought him back to Philadelphia to face charges following a September 28 off-campus robbery and sexual assault.
Police responded to calls for a sexual assault on the 1400 block of Carlisle street shortly after the incident. They found the 20-year-old victim who said she was walking alone earlier in that area when she heard footsteps behind her and turned to see a black man hit her on the arm with a handgun. That’s when the man took her to a nearby construction area, stole items from her backpack and sexually assaulted her, Police said. He fled the scene on foot.
While they found him in New Jersey, Police said Bennett’s last-known address is from the 2400 block of Harlan Street.
The 23-year-old is charged with 12 separate offenses.
They are rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated assault, sexual assault, robbery, simple assault, violations of the uniform firearms act, theft, receiving stolen property, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and possessing instruments of crime.
