Temple Alum Curates Black History Month Exhibit at the Hyatt

The Hyatt is celebrating Black History Month with their newest exhibit, Soft Light.

Soft Light is part of the venue’s larger “maker series,” which aims to spotlight local Philadelphia artists.  Black History Month is not the first cultural celebration the Hyatt has participated in; they also put on a Hispanic Heritage Month exhibition in 2025.

This year’s Black History Month exhibition is led and curated by Temple alum Chelsey Luster. Luster is a Tyler School of Art and Architecture graduate, where she earned her bachelor’s in Fine Arts.

According to her website, she specializes in “mixed media paintings and immersive installations,” and her work explores the intersection of black and queer experiences.

The exhibition contains many different kinds of work from four local artists, all women of color. Brittany Baum is a portrait artist whose work has earned her the Philadelphia Mural Arts fellowship. Denyn Dais is an abstract artist as well as a Tyler graduate, like Luster.  Michele Pierson is a contemporary surrealist artist who has displayed work in several galleries and art centers. Lastly, Susan Ragland, who specializes in urban folk art, typically displayed in museums.

The Soft Light exhibit is available for free to the public at 1620 Chancellor Street in Rittenhouse from January 15th to February 28th. Students who wish to celebrate Black History Month and Temple alumni should be sure to check out Soft Light at the Hyatt.
