With high scoring seniors Alex Izewski and Matt Kacyon gone on the men’s side, and AAC Champion and NCAA Championships competitor Blanca Fernandez graduated, Temple Cross Country will be turning to the younger faces to make an impact for the Owls.
On Friday, the team toed the line along the Philadelphia rivals La Salle, UPenn, Villanova, and St. Joes in the big 5 invitational at the Belmont Plateu.
For the men’s team, it was graduate student Marc Steinsberger leading the charge of underclassmen. He took 6th overall, running a solid 19:11.7. He paved the way for freshman Kevin Lapansky (19:45.9) and sophomore Jonathan Condly, (19:51.3) to finish 14th and 15th, respectively. They were they only Temple runners under 20 minutes.
On the women’s side, Temple went out strong with a solid pack. Crossing the line together, in 5th and 6th place overall, was freshman Grace Moore and sophomore Leisher. Freshman Millie Howard was able to sneak in on the action as well, finishing 10th.
After finishing 5th last year among the five schools, the Owls were able to move up and take 2nd this year behind UPenn, who won both the men’s and women’s races. The men’s team was able to take the 3rd spot behind Villanova and UPenn.
Temple will be back in action this Friday, as the team will travel to Pennington, NJ for the Rider Invitational.
