Jalen Fitzpatrick, Tyler Matakevich, PJ Walker, Austin Jones. Those were the names repeatedly brought up by TV announcers and temple football fans while watching the game on Saturday. Except the one name is for the most part unfamiliar.
After kicking a 33 and a 47-yard field goal on Saturday, everyone wanted to know.
Who is Austin Jones? I headed over to Chodoff Field after practice to learn more about the freshman kicker.
Jones, a native of Orlando, Florida, was thrilled when he learned Temple had offered him a spot on their team last year. During his visit in February his first thought was about how cold it was. Jones’ visit was only the third time he had ever seen snow!
During the interview I asked Austin if he ever had an embarrassing moment while playing football, he told me “not really.” It is easy to say that got me worried because now it was my turn to kick some field goals.
I was lucky to have Austin there to give me some lessons. Making my kicks were bonuses, I was just happy I didn’t slip!
Jones will be back out on the football field looking to continue his stellar kicking on October 11th when the Owls host Tulsa at Lincoln Financial Field.
