There were 3,485 fans, friends, and family who came out to support their newly renovated men’s basketball team for the season opener at The Liacouras Center.
“I’m pumped for a new season of Temple basketball. I’m excited for the new players to come on in and I want to see my Owls win,” Temple fan Danny Podolsky said.
They played the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Monday evening and came out on top 81-70. However, they didn’t have this lead the whole game. They were down by 10 within the first six minutes of the game and then started the second half down by six.
“Tough, gritty win,” head coach Adam Fisher said. “None of these are easy, but I’m really proud of the resilience of our team. When you have 10 new faces, you’re going to see some hiccups and some things through the way. I thought our guys stuck together.”
For many of these Owls, it was their first time wearing a cherry and white uniform.
A new player picked up from the transfer portal who had a standout performance this game was Temple guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. He had 26 points and made this his 100th double-digit scoring game.
“Honestly I think we did pretty good in the portal in the off-season, we got a couple of good transfers, so I feel pretty good about it honestly,” Temple fan Logan Riehl said.
This team secured its first win of the season at The Liacouras Center thanks to the new faces and new team chemistry.
They’ll have a chance to start a winning streak when they take on the Monmouth Hawks in Trenton, New Jersey on Friday at 6 p.m.
