Temple University Celebrates Veterans Day 2024

Temple University takes pride in celebrating both veterans and students actively serving in the military. Celebrations took place on both Temple’s campus and throughout the city of Philadelphia.

Veterans Day offers the opportunity for people of different backgrounds to come together and celebrate the service of the armed forces. Many veterans organizations took to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to show support for their fellow veterans and their families.

Deputy Commanding General James Porter of the 99th Readiness Division believes that events like this are important for the morale of veterans.

He says that events like the parade on the Parkway are “dynamic for the community, for veterans, because it’s just a great way to honor the service and sacrifice for folks that have worn the uniform.”

Veterans Day is also an opportunity to bring attention to how we can support veterans following their service. Thomas Jones of the Warriors Watch RIders reflects on the struggles that many Veterans face.

“There should be no homeless veterans. There should be no veterans in any type of medical distress” Jones expounds.

Celebrations also took place in Mitten Hall on Temple’s campus as military families and members of Temple’s ROTC gathered for a Veterans Day ceremony. Kristie Furiosi, assistant director for military and veteran services at Temple University, believes that Veterans Day celebrations are “a day where we can feel pride” in the University’s students who are currently serving or planning to serve in the armed forces.

Tiernan MacMaster, a Temple reservist in the 3rd Battalion 14th Marine Regiment, believes that Veterans Day celebrations give those currently serving like himself the chance to keep up the “bond that they had when they were on active duty”.

The ceremony took the time to Honor each branch of the military, giving attendees the chance to honor the men and women of the Temple community who have served the country.
