Temple Volleyball Wins Philadelphia Big 5 Tournament

After a great weekend of play, the Temple Volleyball team came out on top in the Big 5 Tournament defeating La Salle and Penn this past Saturday.

In their first game against La Salle, Temple came out with slow defense and offense and lost 23-25. The Owls came out dominating the second game winning 25-17 and tying up the match. With an early lead, Temple was able to prevail in game three winning 25-15 and in game four winning 25-19.

Three of Temple’s players earned double – doubles in the match against La Salle. Junior Irem Asci picked up 15 kills and 11 digs, and Junior Izzy Rapacz had 14 kills and 12 digs. Senior Kyra Coundourides gathered 39 assists and 11 digs.

In their second match of the day, the Owls swept Penn with a 3-0 win to clinch their Big 5 Tournament title. Temple came out in dominating fashion winning the first set 25-18. From the first set, the Owls only became more dominant. Coming from behind in the second set, the Owls were able to take the lead and win 25-16. In the final set, the Owls made a run in the middle of the game and ultimately won the set 25-17.

With Temple’s wins against Villanova, La Salle and Penn, they were crowned the Philadelphia Big 5 Champion. Sophomore Mia Heirakuji earned the tournament MVP title, and Senior Tyler Davis was also named to the All- Tournament team.

This tournament allowed for Head Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam’s 100th win.

The Owls improve their record to 7-3. Temple plays Tulane this Friday at McGonigle Hall at 7PM.
