Temple’s Hip-Hop Club transformed the Howard Gittis Student Center into a free student concert that featured local underground artists like ILYCHROME and Yasukay to celebrate culture and community!
The concert, “CLASS DISMISSED”, was a collaboration with 43CLTR, a Philadelphia-based creative community organization, and ATMOSPHERE, an emerging event production project focused on arts and nightlife.
Ren Cinema, a Hip-hop artist and Philly native, says he has been making music for more than a decade.
He says that hip-hop means more than music: “This art form is just beautiful because it allows you to express yourself. No matter where you come from, no matter if your origin is Black or American… You can always find your lane because it speaks to the people who need the voice the most.”
Kiamuya Mazama, who is the President of the Hip-Hop Club, says that the concert is a way for people to express themselves and celebrate culture and community. “Whether you’re into the fashion aspect of hip-hop, whether you’re into the music, or just the art… We try to bring together everybody!”
The beats took over at the Student Center, and it made a big impression on everyone inside, including students like Favour Bush.
Favour, a freshman at Temple, says that this is the first hip-hop event she has attended.
After being asked what her thoughts were at the concert, she says, “My favorite part is, I think, the first artist [Ren Cinema]… He had a lot of energy! I’m hype, he’s hype, they’re all hype!”
