Temple Women’s Gymnastics closed out its highest score of the season on Sunday’s Senior Night. Three seniors were recognized for all of their hard work and dedication to the team.
Senior captain Jazmyn Estrella came in first place on bars, earning a 9.9 and her fourth bars title of the season.
Jazmyn Estrella transferred from Utah State to Temple two years into her college career. A combination of a scenery and coaching change contributed to her decision.
Head-coach Josh Nilson also started his career at Utah State, where he recruited Jazmyn Estrella. Once Coach Nilson heard of Jazmyn’s transfer plans, it was a no-brainer.
“Once she hit the transfer portal I said, ‘I’m calling Jaz,’” Nilson said.
Jazmyn found her home at Temple a lot sooner than expected.
“I came in two years into school, so these girls didn’t have to welcome me,” Jazmyn said. “They didn’t have to have my back, but they did. So it’s just really important to see these girls support me as much as my other school.”
Though she couldn’t be happier with her decision, Jazmyn faced a lot behind the scenes. From struggling to transfer credits to multiple sport-related injuries, Jazmyn went through it all.
“A lot of people give up. She didn’t give up and she’s helped me here. I can’t believe I’m getting emotional about it…” Coach Nilson said.
It’s no doubt both Coach Nilson and Jazmyn Estrella have faced major changes in their journey, but it did not stop Jazmyn from finishing off strong.
“Temple means the world to me. I love every second of this place. It’s everything” Jazmyn said.
The Owls will close out their regular season on the road against William & Mary this Saturday, March 14th at 1 p.m.
