AAC announces postponement of soccer and volleyball to Spring 2021

The American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday afternoon that all fall competition and conference championships will be postponed until the spring of 2021 for men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

It appears the main motivation behind the decision is to allow teams in the American a chance to compete for an NCAA championship, not just the conference championship.

The NCAA announced on Aug. 13 that there will be no fall sports championships in 2020.

The American previously announced on Aug. 5 that all three teams would have the start of their season delayed until the month of September. Men’s soccer was slated to begin on Sept. 5 and play a ten match double round-robin conference-only schedule.

Women’s soccer was set to play an eight-match single round-robin conference-only schedule beginning on Sept. 6. Women’s volleyball was going to begin the weekend of Sept. 24-27 with a two-division format with each team playing their divisional opponents twice.

Men’s and women’s soccer were going to be allowed to schedule matches with non-conference opponents on or after Sept. 1.

Fall 2020 schedules were never released for any of Temple men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

“A decision regarding cross country competition will be forthcoming pending further NCAA clarification,” Mike Aresco, the conference’s commissioner, wrote in the release.
