Democrat Josh Shapiro is Pennsylvania’s next governor. The current state attorney general defeated Republican opponent Doug Mastriano in a highly contested governor’s race.
Shapiro held an election night event on Tuesday at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania. The event kicked off right after polls closed at 8 pm. Hundreds of supporters filed into the building to wait for election results.
Among the crowd was Pennsylvania State Representative and temple alum, Malcolm Kenyatta. Kenyatta expressed his confidence in Pennsylvania voters and Shapiro’s ability to lead as governor. “I’m excited that josh Shapiro is gonna be focused on the future of Pennsylvania. And if what we saw today, people showing up and engaging in this process, they understand what’s at stake for our democracy,” said Kenyatta.
As the night went on, event goers enjoyed the food and drinks provided. Many kept their eyes glued to the large screen providing up-to-date election results.
Once it was announced that Shapiro was the projected winner, he took to the stage to address the cheering crowd, thanking his family and campaign supporters. “We showed in this campaign that no matter what you look like, where you come from, who you love, or who you pray to, you are valued here in Pennsylvania, and we hear you” Shapiro said.
The new governor-elect assured supporters that although he won the race, the job is not done. He promised to get to work on the issues that matter most to Pennsylvanians. “Tonight, is a beginning not the end of the journey. This is a moment of real opportunity for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” said Shapiro.
